Darren Sheridan - brother of Latics chief John - was celebrating last week as his Barrow side clinched promotion to the Blue Square Premier in dramatic fashion.

Matt Henney scored the only goal at Burton's Pirelli Stadium to see off Stalybridge Celtic and secure Barrow's place in the top flight of non-league football.

Ex-Latics midfielder Sheridan has masterminded a remarkable turnaround since taking joint control at Holker Street with former Rochdale man Dave Bayliss.

An excellent run of form secured a place in the play-offs, where Barrow saw off AFC Telford in a two-legged semi-final to set up a meeting with Celtic.

Latics old boys Ashley Winn, Chris Hall - Stalybridge's top scorer with 19 goals this season - and Matty Barlow all appeared for the losing finalists.

Sheridan, Bayliss and their Barrow side will now line up in the Blue Square Premier in 2008/09, pitting their wits against former League sides Wrexham and Mansfield, who were relegated this time around.

They will be joined by Kettering, who went up as Blue Square North champions by a 17-point margin.  Meanwhile, champions Lewes and play-off winners Eastbourne will come up from the Blue Square South.
