It is the club's sad duty to report the passing of the popular Ernie Cooksey.  He was 28.

Ernie had twice battled cancer and most recently fought against malignant melanoma.  He was admitted to hospital a few days ago and passed away last night surrounded by his family.

Cooksey won the hearts and minds of Latics fans - and indeed football fans in general - everywhere with his all-action and committed performances.

He joined Athletic after the club went into administration and made 41 appearances before joining near neighbours Rochdale in September 2004.

The club would like to pass on their sincere condolences and best wishes to Ernie's family at this sad time.
