John Sheridan rescued Kelvin Lomax from the footballing wilderness by bringing him back to the club in summer 2006.
Released by former boss Ronnie Moore at the end of the 2005/06 season, Lomax was cast out in the cold before being thrown a lifeline by the Latics boss.
Initially offered training time with the team, Lomax won a succession of short-term deals before eventually being handed a contract until summer 2008.
The full-back had made his first-team debut as a substitute during the final game of the 2003/04 season at Notts County.
Lomax completed a successful two-month loan spell at Rochdale between September and October 2007, making ten appearances for the League Two side.
He returned to Boundary Park and made the left-back spot his own following the departure of Ryan Bertrand, playing the majority of the second half of the season.
Lomax was rewarded for his efforts with a new three-year contract in February 2008.
