Youngster Neal Eardley is widely regarded as one of Latics' brightest prospects and is building some useful experience after captaining the side in 2007/08.
A product of the club's successful youth system, Eardley became the latest graduate to see first-team action when he made his debut against Scunthorpe United in May 2005.
Eardley joined the senior squad for pre-season training ahead of the 2006/07 season and forced himself into the team under new boss John Sheridan.
The right-back spot became his own, and Eardley made 40 appearances, scoring two goals.
Further progress was made in 2007/08 when the Llandudno-born defender was handed the skipper's armband for long periods in the absence of Sean Gregan.
Eardley is also making good progress on the international scene.
Eardley won his first senior cap for Wales when he appeared as a half-time substitute during their 1-0 international friendly win over Bulgaria in Burgas on August 22, 2007.
He has since won further international caps, and participated in Wales' ultimately unsuccessful Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.
The defender has also represented his country at U17, U19 and U21 level.
